WSL Thursday Roundup: Dodgers Get First WSL Victory

The De Pere Dodgers picked up their first Wisconsin State League victory with a 6-1 win over the Oshkosh Giants Thursday night.

Blake Rutherford hopes every outing could go as well as Thursday, as Rutherford struck out 10 batters to carry the De Pere Dodgers to a 6-1 victory over the Oshkosh Giants on Wednesday to get their first Wisconsin State League victory.

Joe Baier racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Dodgers. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the fifth inning.

It was a good day at the plate for the Giants’ Hunter Messerschmidt. Messerschmidt went 3-4 and drove in one. He singled in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings.

Luke Gajewski took the loss for Oshkosh. He allowed six runs in five innings, walked three and struck out three. Josh Bartelt came on in relief, holding the Dodgers hitless over two innings, allowing no earned runs, walked none and struck out four, but it was too little too late for Oshkosh.

De Pere took the only lead they woudl need thanks to a first inning that saw two runs cross the plate on an RBI double by Joe Baier and an RBI single by Sam Kohnle.

The Dodgers piled on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The inning got off to a hot start when Joe Baier singled, bringing home Zach Abfall.

The Giants managed to score one run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Messerschmidt.

West Allis Nationals 4, Sheboygan A’s 2

Aaron Goecks went 1-1, sparking the West Allis Nationals to a 4-2 victory over Sheboygan A’s on Thursday.

The Sheboygan A’s’ lineup had no answer for Aaron Woods. The A’s managed just two hits off of the West Allis Nationals’ pitcher, who allowed one earned run, walked none and struck out three during his five innings of work.

Wyatt Olson racked up two RBIs on two hits for the A’s. He doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the sixth inning.

Derek Loomans, the A’s player/manager, took the loss. He lasted just six innings, walked two, struck out five, and allowed four runs.

The bottom of the third saw the West Allis Nationals take an early lead, 1-0. After Jonah Meidl-Zahorodny doubled, Matt Richer singled, plating Meidl-Zahorodny.

The Nationals didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring two runs in the fourth inning when they scored on two singles.

The Nationals answered Sheboygan’s top inning with one run of their own in the sixth. The West Allis Nationals scored on an error.
