The Wisconsin State League has announced that Matt Moore has been named the league’s new Director of Umpires.

Moore replaces Gary Kalkopf who announced his retirement.

Moore was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coordinator of Baseball Umpires in September, 2022. Moore has been involved with baseball umpiring for more than 30 years. He umpired games in NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, as well as the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Moore worked the 2013 NCAA Division III World Series as one of two crew chiefs. He umpired five NCAA Division III Regionals, including one as crew chief (2013) and assistant crew chief (2012).

Since 2015, he has served as the coordinator of baseball umpires for the American Rivers Conference and College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. He is also the coordinator of baseball umpires for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, and an assignor for Waldorf University (Iowa) and Viterbo University (Wis.). He previously served as a sub-assignor for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Moore has worked with the Collegiate Baseball Umpire Alliance to teach new umpires and promote umpires into the championship rotation, as well as higher levels of college and professional baseball.

Kalkopf served as the Wisconsin State League’s Director of Umpires for nine season, from 2015-2023.

“The WSL is grateful to Gary Kalkopf for his 9 years of service as the league’s Director of Umpires,” said WSL Executive Secretary Steve Elliott. “As Gary steps aside, we’re pleased to have Matt Moore step in.  Matt, like Gary, is well respected and connected within the fraternity of collegiate umpires and the larger semi-professional baseball community. While Gary will be missed, the WSL will continue to thrive under the capable leadership of Matt.”
