Shaun Wegner named the new A’s head coach

The Sheboygan A's have selected Shaun Wegner, a 4-year Division 1 player at UW-Milwaukee and currently a graduate assistant coach at Minnesota State College in Mankato as head coach.

The Sheboygan A’s have selected 24-year-old Shaun Wegner, a 4-year Division 1 player at UW-Milwaukee and currently a graduate assistant coach at Minnesota State College in Mankato, to manage the semi-pro club this season.

Wegner is a native of Watertown where he was a 4-year baseball letterwinner, 3-year all-Little Ten Conference Player and was named to the all-state team as a senior. He also played soccer and was a 3-time all conference goalie, and basketball, recording a triple-double in his senior year. He holds school baseball and soccer records.

UWM opponents were wary of Wegner, a strong-armed catcher who specialized in either throwing out or picking off base-runners. He was named to the Horizon League Newcomer team as a freshman and was all-league as a sophomore. at UWM. In terms of numbers, his sophomore season was his best as he hit .329, (389 in the Horizon League)

In his senior year, he hit an even .300 with 51 hits and 29 runs batted in in 47 games. He played outfield when he wasn’t catching.

For his career he hit .286 in 180 games.

Wegner is currently working with outfielders and as a hitting coach at Minnesota State, which is ranked 10th in the nation (D-2) and predicted to compete for the Northern Sun Conference championship. He has also coached on the Legion level.

“I’m excited to have Shaun with us and I’m sure our fans are going to love him. He’s a bright guy (4-year honor roll and Magna Cum Laude graduate in high school, double major – economics and communications – in college, and working in a sports management Masters program in grad school), articulate, organized, directed and remarkably mature and composed for his years,” A’s general manager Denny Moyer said.

Wegner’s wife Chelsea is a customer service representative for Verizon Wireless in Mankato.

He becomes the 14th manager in the A’s 48-year history. Chad Gehr ran the club for the past three seasons, posting a 108-68 record.
