After dropping a heartbreaker in the opener, the Kenosha Kings split a Wisconsin State League doubleheader with the Lombard (Ill.) Orioles Saturday at Simmons Field.

The Orioles won the first game 5-1 in 13 innings, with the Kings (18-4, 10-1 WSL) taking the nightcap 3-0.

“This was one of those classic Kenosha-Lombard matchups,” Kings manager Tim Pulizzano said. “The first team to run out of gas or make a mistake was going to win.”

Jon Olson pitched 10 innings allowing one run on eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in the no-decision. Brandon Jeffery allowed four runs in his third inning of work on four hits. He struck out three and walked none.

“This is as sharp as Jon has looked in a couple of years. He brought his ‘A’ game,” Pulizzano said. “(Brandon) did a really good job of keeping us in the game for three innings. We were asking a lot of the kid.”

Joe Ferro had a solo homer in the fifth inning for the lone Kings’ tally.

In Game 2, Randy Johnson (4-1) pitched a five-hit shutout with three walks and six strikeouts.

The Kings got all the offense they would need with a three-run third. Kyle Frye’s RBI single and Billy Johnson’s two-run double were the big blows.
