WSL Tuesday Roundup: As Advance to NEWBL Championship; Giants Fall in Semis

With a 7-1 victory over Appleton, the Sheboygan A's advanced to the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League Championship for the third straight season. In the other NEWBL semi-final, the Oshkosh Giants fell to Menasha 6-0.

SHEBOYGAN – When you think playoff baseball, you think big
crowds with talented teams competing at a high level, bringing an intense
atmosphere to the ballpark. The Sheboygan A’s and Appleton Legends did just
that in the second round of the Northeastern Wisconsin League playoffs Tuesday
night.
Behind the electric crowd, the A’s advanced to the Championship
series with a 7-1 win over the Appleton Legends.
Neither team recorded a hit until the 3rd inning.
In the A’s half of said inning, Tony Grannis roped a single to left field. The
next batter, Dylan Detert found a gap for an RBI double to give the A’s a 1-0
lead.
The crowd enjoyed a big 5th inning that saw seven
A’s batters head to the plate. In the frame TJ McCoy and Harry Steldt notched
RBI hits increasing the A’s lead to 5-0.
Appleton put one run on the board in the 6th but
A’s pitching did not allow another run leading the team to the 7-1 triumph.
An excellent outing from A’s starter Eric Schmitz kept the A’s
in control throughout the contest. Schmitz had a no-hitter going for the first
4 1/3 innings. In the victory, he recorded five strikeouts while only allowing
four hits in seven complete innings of work. Brandon Winfield went the final
two innings striking out three and only allowing one base runner.
Tony Grannis reached base three times, two via singles and
the other by fielder’s choice. He also scored three runs. McCoy finished the
night with three hits and three RBI. Dylan Detert had three hits, two RBI and
two stolen bases. Blake Fleischman added three hits and an RBI.
As a team, the A’s recorded 14 hits.
With the Menasha Macs besting the Oshkosh Giants Tuesday
night, the A’s will take on the Macs for the third year in a row in the Championship
Series of the Northeastern Wisconsin League. The first game of the series will be in Menasha and the A’s will return
home to host the Macs on Friday night.
Menasha Macs 6, Oshkosh Giants 0
The Menasha Macs advanced to the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball
League championship series with a 6-0 victory against Oshkosh on Tuesday
at Koslo Park in Menasha.
The Macs (27-6) will face Sheboygan in the best-of-three final. Sheboygan advanced with a 7-1 victory over the Appleton Legends.
The first game of the championship series is Thursday at Koslo Park.
Jason Wierschke pitched eight innings of four-hit ball for Menasha. He struck out 11.
Jack Taschner pitched the ninth inning and struck out two while allowing one hit.
Colin Englebert was 4-for-5 for the Macs and Mac Shumann drove in two runs.
