Alumni Spotlight: Tyler Jones
December 14, 2016
Former Sheboygan A's pitcher Tyler Jones is featured in today's alumni spotlight. Jones, who spent the 2016 season in AA for the New York Yankees, was taken 6th overall in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and will now be placed on their 40-man roster.
Name: Tyler Jones
Position: Pitcher
Birthplace: Milwaukee, WI
Drafted: 21st round of the 2010 MLB Draft (Chicago White Sox); 11th round of the 2011 MLB Draft (Minnesota Twins); 1st round (6th overall) of the 2016 MLB Rule 5 Draft (Arizona Diamondbacks)
WSL Team: Sheboygan A’s
2016 Season: Class AA Eastern League
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Jones 6th overall in the MLB Rule 5 Draft on December 8th. The selection of Jones cost the D-backs $100,000. They must keep him on the Major League roster for the entire season or offer him back to the Yankees for $50,000. It is also possible they could work out a trade for Jones if the D-backs wanted to send him to the Minors at some point.
“We’ve had our eye on him,” general manager Mike Hazen said. “He had a great second half in Double-A for the Yankees. Good power arm, good fastball, power curveball. We think it’s a worthwhile opportunity to take another guy with a power arm and bring him into the mix. Bring him into Spring Training and compete.”
