The Wisconsin State League Challenge has completed after a long weekend of games in Sheboygan.
Games were held June 12-13 at Wildwood Park and Field of Dreams with all WSL teams in action over the two-day weekend.
The statement of the weekend came from the Lombard Orioles, who proved once again they are the class of the WSL. After their four games, they remain unbeaten at 10-0 overall. They have now defeated each team in the WSL so far this season.
The West Allis Nationals remain in second place in the WSL despite going 1-2 over the stretch. The Nationals defeated Greater Green Bay 8-1 Saturday before falling to Lombard 7-2 Saturday in a matchup of the top two teams in the WSL. The Nationals also dropped their Sunday game to Addison 16-5
Sitting in a log jam in the middle of the standings are Kenosha, Burlington, and Sheboygan. Kenosha split the only two games they played over the weekend, dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker in extra innings to Sheboygan to open up play Saturday, but rebounding with a 12-0 shutout over Greater Green Bay.
Burlington also only played a pair of games over the weekend, dropping a 7-1 contest to Lombard but picking up a 11-7 win over Addison. Both games were played Saturday.
The hosts of the weekend, Sheboygan, went 2-1, sweeping their two games Saturday over Kenosha and Addison by scores of 4-3 in extras and 7-3. Sunday saw the A’s also fall victim to the Orioles 5-1. The 5-1 score was the Orioles closest contest of their four. Sheboygan took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning when Lombard then capitalized on some Sheboygan miscues to score five.
The Addison Braves and Greater Green Bay both went 1-3 over the weekend. The Braves picked up a surprising Sunday win over second-place West Allis, before falling to Greater Green Bay in the final game of the day.
The Wisconsin State League Challenge weekend is a weekend where all WSL teams meet in a central location for regular season games. The purpose of the weekend is to offer teams a chance to play a fifth game against each other while cutting down on travel.
