MANITOWOC — The Manitowoc Bandits saw their four-game winning streak snapped on Sunday in a pair of losses to the VeePak Hawks, 4-1 and 7-4, in a doubleheader at Municipal Field.
Bandits’ starter Matt Phipps had kept the Hawks scoreless through six innings but the Hawks plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning of Game 1 to snap the streak.
Brad Liermann broke open a pitchers’ duel with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for Manitowoc to give the hosts a brief 1-0 lead.
The Hawks got things going a little sooner in Game 2, scoring five runs in the top of the fourth inning to provide enough of a cushion to hold off a pair of late rallies by the Bandits.
Sam Spurney hit a home run for the second-straight day and starting pitcher Gregg Herr took the loss on the mound for Manitowoc in Game 2.
On Saturday in the second half of a Wisconsin State League/Chicago Suburban League Challenge game at Municipal Field, the Bandits completed a sweep of the Chicago Wildcats, 6-4. Manitowoc won the first half of the doubleheader, 4-3.
Bandits pitcher Parker Johnson came on in relief to score the win in Game 2 after Stewart Larson hit a three-run homer to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Bandits are off until Wednesday when they host Sheboygan at Municipal Field at 7:30 p.m.
