KENOSHA — If any of the Kenosha Kings had early dinner plans Sunday night, Randy Johnson and Travis Vanderwall made sure they arrived in plenty of time for hors d’oeuvres.
Johnson needed just 61 pitches in tossing a one-hit shutout and Vanderwall followed with a snappy three-hit shutout as the Kings swept the Addison (Ill.) Braves, 10-0 and 4-0, in a Wisconsin State League doubleheader Sunday at Simmons Field.
The Kings responded from a pair of losses in their season-opening doubleheader on Saturday.
“It was a nice efficient afternoon,” Kings’ manager Tim Pulizzano said. “We put some of our top guys on the mound and they were right around the plate and let the defense play behind them.”
Johnson, who faced the minimum, allowed a one-out single in the fifth inning before inducing an inning-ending double play. The right-hander finished with seven strikeouts without issuing a walk.
The Kings put the 10-run mercy rule into effect in the sixth inning.
Vanderwall took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing three straight singles. With one out, Vanderwall got out of the jam when the Braves hit into a 5-6-3 double play to end the game.
“We wanted them to go out and set the tone for the rest of the year,” Pulizzano said. “They pounded the strike zone.”
Kyle Frye went 5-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in the twin bill. Billy Johnson went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI in the opener.
The Kings (2-2) play at Genoa City in a Langsdorf League game 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
